Waitaphata Stream [ iv ]

The Waitapha Stream begins at Dickeys Flat where a small rock dam creates a large swiming hole for campers. The first main rapid is a series of cascades ending in two narrow drops. The first picture hers is the first of the two drops. Closely following this rapid is the Angle Falls which is a 2 - 3 metre water fall at 45º to the direction of the river. This has many lines of varying dificuilty. Towards the miiddle of the trip there are two consecutive grade 3+ to 4 rapids. The first has a large island in the middle of the river with an easy shallow left hand line and a technical drop on the right with two large holes, and a cliff to doge at the bottom. The top picture on the right shows the entry into the right hand line. The second of the two rapids is a boulder sieve. The river bank goes straight ahead, but the boulders cause a short drop in the centre, paralel with the bank. The current is deceptive and the chance of pining is high, if you jusge it incorrectly. The last large rapid is another boulder sieve. The majority of the water flows down a narrow channel into the pointed end rock that is slightly undercut. This is often portaged, but can be paddled. The rest of the river is technical grade 3 with some good play spots.
