(Ohinimuri
River)

The Karangahake Gorge is a short section of the Ohinimuri river which drops steeply with some awesome grade 4 fun. The river is in a deep gorge, but it has road on one sode and a well used walking track on the other. The first few rapids are small with a few waves and holes to warm up on. The first main rapid is the Corner Rapid which is a large jumble of rocks covering about 60 metres. The current can be very deceptive, and kayaks often end up pinned on a large rock at the bottom of the first drop. The bottom of the rapid is a good play spot, with a pop-out hole a good bank for cliff splats galore. The rest of the river is pretty much one long fast rapid. There are many drops, holes, edies, and playspots, but no place where the river realy stops. At high flows this can be a very dangerous stretch of water with huge river wide weirs.
